December 2006 The case of The Vanishing Background! Every now and then we sponsor competitions set up by our online and offline friends and partners. This time round we are very pleased to announce the winner of the Lucky Oliver competition ‘The case of The Vanishing Background’. The aim of the competition was to isolate and extract an object from its background by any means available – using familiar Photoshop methods – magic wand, pen tool & alpha channels. The response to the competition was amazing with over 1,500 submissions!! The winner was Laurent Renault from France with the image ‘The Great Escape’ which can be seen here. The Editor’s Choice issue, which is an annual compendium of state-of-the-art photo products, serves as the ultimate buyer’s guide, helping readers navigate through an ever-expanding world of cutting-edge photographic technology. For the 2006 Editor’s Choice issue, many hundreds of products were reviewed, and honors were awarded to about 100 of these. Special accolades were given to products that represented good value and technological innovation. The best imaging products of the year were chosen in the following categories: Professional D-SLRs, Advanced D-SLRs, Entry-level D-SLRs, High-res EVFs, Superzoom EVFs, Digital Compacts, Ultrathin Compacts, Lenses, Lighting, Camera Cellphones, Wide-format Printers, Snapshot Printers, Fine-art Printers, Photo Storage & Display, Imaging Software and Imaging Essentials.
